Once your application is reviewed, you will be contacted by a recruiting officer to arrange a one-on-one interview. This interview will discuss the details of your Personal Disclosure Form and outline the expectations of the selection process.
Conducted by three members of BTPS, this one-hour Behavioral Descriptive Interview focuses on the competencies required for policing. The panel assesses your answers based on the principle that past behaviour predicts future behaviour, and includes general questions about your application.
The APCAT is a 2-hour and 15-minute written multiple-choice exam that assesses judgment, observation skills, written communication, learning/memory recall, and problem analysis. A cut-off score of 84/120 or 70% is required to pass.
Applicants must pass the APCAT to move to the next stage. If you fail, you must wait one month before retaking it. After a second failure, specific deferral periods apply. The test is valid for five years and is used by all Alberta police services.
This physical fitness test, developed by experts in policing and fitness, ensures candidates possess the physical capabilities needed for the demands of policing.
This examination assists BTPS in identifying applicants who meet our standards of honesty, integrity, and suitability for employment. It requires full disclosure and honesty during the Personal Disclosure Form review. The examination is lengthy and those scheduled to be tested will be given specific instructions before testing.
If you have taken a pre-employment polygraph within the last 12 months, disclose this as you may not need to retake it.
Applicants take a series of psychological tests evaluated by a psychologist to determine suitability for employment as a police officer.
A thorough background check is conducted, including employment and character references, credit checks, security clearances, and police information systems checks. Applicants must also provide copies of education transcripts and job performance evaluations. The results of the checks will not be released and remain the sole property of the Blood Tribe Police Service.
Senior members of BTPS review applicant files. The selection committee chooses the most suitable and best-qualified candidates, and applicants are informed of their status by the recruiting officer.
Successful completion of an occupational medical exam conducted by BTPS’ Occupational Health provider is required to ensure candidates are fit for duty.
New recruits undergo provincially and federally recognized training through Lethbridge College’s Police Training Program. This comprehensive training prepares recruits for a successful career in policing.
